  • The Meaning of Mintaka

Mintaka is a famous river in the most eastern part of China, in the province of Xinxjang. The source of Mintaka is at the short boundary line among China and Afghanistan, just at the border to Pakistan and Tajikistan. The river collects waters at the conjunction point of three of the world's most famous and highest mountain ranges: Karakorum, Pamir and Hindukush. The water is taken to the Chinese desert Gobi where it just disappears. The photos are taken at 37°15'N/75°35'E, 4000m asl, on the Karakorum Highway. More pictures of the remote area are available from Arnold Barmettler.

Mintaka (literally: min-TAK-uh) is the west end star (delta Orionis) in the belt of Orion, the Great Hunter. The literal transscription of this Arabic name is `The Belt''. (Chart: XEphem 3.2.2, image: STScI DSS)
